We are a country that likes food! There are soo many national food days it's borderline ridiculous. Rather than take up blog space each time there is a national food day I want to list some of them here. Then you can contact your local restaurants or grocery stores to see what specials they may have going on.
Today is National Lasagna Day! My family loves lasagna. There are soo many ways to make lasagne - alfredo, seafood, vegetable, meat, spicy sausage, and the list goes on. Today Olive Garden and Buca di Beppo are having specials. Call ahead to see if you have to be a subscriber to their emails to get the specials or if you can just walk in and get them.
It's National Watermelon Day on Saturday. Our local grocer is offering free samples. National Cheesecake Day is tomorrow. If you live near a Cheesecake Factory they are having 1/2 price cheesecakes all day. Other local restaurants are offering up freebies or specials on cheesecake too.
And just to be silly and show our obsession with food here is a list of foods to celebrate next month:

Do you ever read an article in a magazine and think to yourself, "That's good information"? Well, whenever that happens to me, I rip out the article (unless of course the magazine is not mine) and put it in a designated folder. Recently I re-read one of those articles and wanted to share it's findings with you all. The article is about getting outdoors.
Did you know that research shows when you are outside it sparks creativity, helps your health, and can improve kids grades and attention in school? And it's free!!
Here are some tips of things to do while you are outside -
1. Go letterboxing visit www.letterboxing.org to see if there is a letterbox in your area. Or start one as a family.
2. At night go outside and count stars or listen for night creatures (owls, bats, crickets, frogs, lightning bugs, etc.) and tell stories about them. For added fun, we like to lay down on a blanket or on a lounge chair. (It's easier on the neck.) You can go to www.stardate.org for stargazing info and tips.
3. Sign up to be a local scientist at www.citizenscience.gov/#. They love it when citizens to collect data about the natural surroundings such as the Project Pigeon Watch or the Great Sunflower Project to help the bees.
4. Count how many trees are in your neighborhood then classify them - flowering trees, fruit trees, climbing trees, etc.
5. Pretend you are all on the home owner's association board to find the most beautiful lawn in your neighborhood. Who would get the prize? Is there a tie? What makes that lawn so beautiful?
6. Go on an angel scavenger hunt! We have created a custom made scavenger hunt for you and your angel on our Kid's page (accessible with purchase.)
These are just some fun ways to get outside, get going, and create memories as a family. Memories that your kids will cherish and probably pass on to their kids.

The season is right and the temperatures are perfect for National Ice Cream Day! In 1984 President Ronald Reagan tagged the month of July and specifically the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day and month. As Americans we like our ice cream. Roughly 90% of us eat it. That's a lot of ice cream. Another statistic says that the average American eats 23 pounds of ice cream a year. Woah!
Places across the country are celebrating in wallet-friendly ways. Cold Stone Creamery (one of our faves) is offering a BOGO deal for its Reward members. They are also offering a gift card special online.
Baskin-Robbins, Carvel, Dairy Queen, Dippin' Dots, Godiva Boutiques, Johnny Rockets, and Yogurtland are all offering some type of special. Call your local store to see what special they have. For the four-legged members of the family, PetSmart will be giving away free doggie ice cream. That'll get the tail wagging.
Our local groceries stores have BOGO deals on ice cream too if you'd rather eat it at home while watching a cool movie or by the pool.
However you decide to celebrate this National Day may it be a treat to your tummy and budget!

A couple years ago we had the privilege of attending a WWII Spirit of '45 celebration. The Spirit of '45 celebrates the anniversary of when WWII ended. I, personally, love these patriotic events. It gives me a chance to say thank you to our vets who valiantly fought many years ago against Hitler's regime. It is also an opportunity to hear their brave historic stories that need to be retold again and again.
At the Spirit of '45 event, there was a WWII Vet who took the mic and said he had a song he'd like to sing. He wrote this song and sang it impromptu for the crowd. I'm soo glad he did! We loved it and I think you will too.
