We appreciate having a doctor "in the house" to help our families get healthy and be healthy. This time around Dr. Deepa Sukumar advises us on simple food facts with some really good tips. You can connect with her at www.gracemdconnect.com.
*Buy the freshest foods available. They will have the best taste and highest nutrient (i.e., vitamin) content. Spend the most time in the produce section in the supermarket. Choose a rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables for your children. *There is little evidence that organic foods have higher nutritional quality than conventionally-produced foods. Both organic and conventional farming supply nutritious foods when selected as part of a well-balanced diet, which should be rich in fruits and vegetables. *When choosing bread, pasta and cereals for your family, go for whole grain. *Food like strawberries, spinach, apples, grapes, peaches, pears, potatoes, cherries, tomatoes, celery and nectarines need to be washed thoroughly before eating. *Consider using frozen or canned fruits and vegetables as an alternative or supplement to fresh produce. These foods maintain most of their nutritional value and may also reduce pesticide exposure as compared to fresh produce. *Avoid foods that contain more than five ingredients in the label, artificial ingredients or ingredients you cannot pronounce. *Eat a variety of foods to ensure a balanced nutritional intake and to lessen contamination from any one source. *Always wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with a dish brush, but do not use soap or other detergents. *Peel fruits and vegetables before eating and throw away the outer leaves of leafy vegetables. Some nutrients and fiber may be lost when produce is peeled. *Trim fat from meat and skin from poultry and fish because some pesticide residues are concentrated in fat. *Make sure that apple juice and cider are pasteurized, to reduce the risk of food-borne illness such as E.Coli O157. Dr. Sukumar is a Board Certified Pediatrician and is available via video for medical consults from the comfort of your home. #pediatrician #drdeepasukumar #kids #foodadvice #doctorsorders #health #angelbooksforkids #angelbooks #whereisyourangel #angelwatchingoverme
