Each of our books come with a plush "watchman angel." We have been asked by a few of you, why is it called a "watchman" angel? Usually everything we do around here is given extra thought as to how it relates to angels and the message. Some things around here have a double entendre.
The reason we call our angels "watchmen" is because it's one of the roles angels play in our lives. Merriam Webster defines a watchman as, "a person who keeps watch, a guard." Synonyms for a watchman include: custodian, guardian, keeper, lookout, minder, sentinel, watch. In Biblical times, prophets were know as watchmen giving warnings where needed of impending danger and giving instruction. (Ez. 3:17-21, Ruth 4:1-12) In ancient agrarian times watchmen were an integral part of society. They helped to protect their crops from thieves or wild animals. Cities erected watchtowers with watchman on top to look out for the best interests of its citizens. The watchman could alert the city if an enemy was coming. Then the city could close its gates and prepare for battle. Watchman also observed all the activities of the city and knew the residents and their habits. The idea of a watchman brings comfort to me. It is a comfort to know that someone has my back and is watching out for my best interests. Hence, the term "watchman angels." The rest of this week we will be introducing more of our company culture to you.
